Saudi Arabia contributes 50,000€ to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)
His Excellency Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ziad Al Atiyah, presented to the Director-General of the Organization, Fernando Arias, the Kingdom's contribution to the establishment of the new Chemistry and Technology Center in the amount of (50,000) fifty thousand euros.
During the signing ceremony, His Excellency the ambassador stated that the Kingdom has always been a forerunner to contribute to everything that would enhance international cooperation, and the donation was considered an embodiment and extension of the Kingdom's interest and its consistent policy aimed at strengthening cooperation to ban weapons of mass destruction and prevent their spread, and a commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention for its role in strengthening international peace and security.
He pointed out that the establishment of this center is an implementation of the contents of Article (11) of the Convention, which emphasized economic and technical development and international cooperation in the field of chemical activities for purposes not prohibited by it, especially with regard to the transfer of technology, equipment and expertise related to chemical industries not prohibited under the Convention to developing countries, which will contribute to promoting international economic development and benefit all parties. The new Chemistry and Technology Center, whose foundation stone was recently celebrated, will constitute a turning point in the work of the Organization, and it will be an essential bridge to achieve aspirations, especially in the transfer of technology and technical assistance to the States Parties, and a beacon. For science and knowledge in the field of chemistry.
For his part, the Director-General of the OPCW expressed his deep appreciation and sincere thanks to the government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques for this donation, which confirms the Kingdom's policy in supporting the organization and its deep belief in the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention, and the implementation of its purposes.
The Deputy Director-General of the Organization, Ambassador Odette Melono, attended the signing ceremony as well as the Deputy Head of mission and Director of the International Organizations and Courts Department, Mr. Nasser bin Awad Al-Ghannoum.
