The development of the Holy Mosque of Makkah Al Mukaramah is an extremely important subject and one which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in its capacity as Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, takes with the utmost seriousness. This role is at the heart of the principles upon which Saudi Arabia is founded. The Qibla (the point to which all Muslims turn to pray) is the birthplace of Islam. This is the most sacred site for all Muslims.

As you are aware, the Pilgrimage to Makkah will take place next week and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. This is a journey that should be undertaken by Muslims once in their life. They perform this religious obligation with only one purpose in their minds and hearts: to surrender to God Almighty and offer their prayers and devotion.

In order to be able to accommodate the increasing numbers of Muslims who are able to perform Hajj over the next decades, the Government of Saudi Arabia has embarked on a multi-billion pounds project to expand the Holy Mosque at Makkah within the framework of our religious heritage thus ensuring for future generations a safe and sacred experience.

Everyone in Saudi Arabia is now concentrating on looking after the estimated 3 million pilgrims as they begin their observances and offerings for Hajj.
